At what age should children learn to read? How do I cultivate a love of reading in my child? Should I sign up for phonics? If I don’t, will my child fall behind in school?

Children around the world are under intense and increasing pressure to demonstrate reading abilities at earlier and earlier ages. As a result, parents and teachers often feel obliged to push direct reading instruction at the expense of many other essential developmental goals, including the socio-emotional, physical and cognitive needs of young children.

In this workshop, you will:
• Explore reading strategies that are frequently employed by strong adult readers
• Examine the research on the development of language and literacy in young children
• Discuss the implications of this on how we approach reading instruction
• Develop practical strategies for the home and classroom that are designed to cultivate reading in a developmentally appropriate, holistic and joyful way that honours and protects childhood.

About the Facilitator

Joanna Lim holds a Master of Education in Learning and Teaching from Harvard University, where she studied under Professor Catherine Snow, a pioneer in the field of language development. She previously worked at Hils Learning, teaching a variety of children experiencing reading difficulties, and has also taught reading courses for adults, based on the Harvard Reading Strategies course. She believes that with intentional strategies and practice, deeper literacy is a lifelong journey that is achievable for all.

The Language of Food: Healthy and Joyful Eating with Young Children

The image of a happy family in many of our minds is one of parents and children sharing a meal together, full of joy and laughter. If you have young children and wonder why, in stark contrast, mealtimes are some of the most stressful times of your day, you are not alone.

If you are keen to explore how to build a healthy eating culture in your family, this practical workshop will address:

- How to address challenging behaviours during mealtimes

- How to cultivate independent eating and a love of food

- How to eat healthy and develop a positive relationship with food

Inspired by the many requests from parents in the Anyaman community to share the recipes for our well-loved meals, this workshop includes a cooking class component. Join us to build some practical skills in the kitchen, where you can learn to make our children’s favourite - Aunty Ayen’s “Chickenny Nuggetties” made from scratch! About the Facilitators

This workshop draws on the insight and practice we have gained from our experience preparing, serving and sharing hundreds of meals with the children at Anyaman.

The first part of the workshop will be facilitated by Joanna Lim, founder and teacher at Anyaman Preschool, who believes that beyond nutrition, food is also intricately connected with our emotional well being. The cooking component will be jointly delivered by Valerie Nathan, teacher as well as facilitator of our highly popular cooking classes at Anyaman, as well as Aunty Ayen, who has lovingly and skilfully prepared the vast majority of the meals served since Anyaman first opened its doors.

In this workshop, participants will delve into the fundamentals of quality picture books. In today’s world of screen dominance and heavily commercialised children’s literature, developing a critical eye to curate an intentional collection of quality books for our children is of vital importance.

In this workshop, participants will:

• Learn, through examples, to recognise the elements and techniques used in high quality picture books
• Explore techniques and skills to read books in a way that provokes deep thinking and a lifelong love of books
• Examine and discuss examples of books that address challenging but important topics, such as gender inequality and violence

During the workshop, we will be delving deep into three diverse examples of quality picture books: 'Where the Wild Things Are' by Maurice Sendak, 'Home' (also published under 'Belonging') by Jeannie Baker, and 'Wilfrid Gordon McDonald Partridge' by Mem Fox. For the best workshop experience, we recommend having a hard copy of these books ready to hand. You can purchase (an additonal RM135 for the 3 titles) or rent from us for a deposit. A child’s brain is still developing and no matter how mature they might seem, the reptilian brain is where they mostly operate from. There are limits to how much they are able to control their emotions. How can we, as adults, regulate ourselves - and in turn, help support rather than punish our children when they are in a dysregulated state?

This workshop will help you understand how to spot and respond to dysregulation in yourself and in your child in order to feel more present, connected, safe, and secure together. Fill in this form to register your interest.

At Anyaman, we believe maths to be an essential, natural and even enjoyable component of early childhood. In this workshop, we will:

  • Unpack common misconceptions and assumptions that negatively impact attitudes towards maths

  • Examine the research on the development of maths skills and discuss how this applies to maths instruction

  • Explore key maths concepts in the early years and discover how to recognise and encourage it in the home and classroom

  • Discuss everyday opportunities for joyful maths learning that respects the child’s innate drive to make sense of numbers.

Everyone has the right to feel safe, all of the time. Given the fact that children are much more likely to be harmed by someone they know than by a stranger, it is important that they develop strong personal safety skills from an early age. This is a critical parent workshop on protective behaviours which centres around confidence and resilience rather than fear.

Emergent Curriculum is one of the key pillars of the Reggio Emilia approach. It is a method of developing curriculum in a way that follows the child’s interests and allows for deep exploration. In this workshop, participants will be able to explore and examine work samples and documentation from past investigations conducted with children at Anyaman. Parents and teachers like will learn practical methods to apply this approach in the home or classroom.
